Creating Slideshows On Your Website May 24, 2006

There are numerous ways you can share photos with friends, including the free Flickr service and a variety of toys, any number of open source packages that allow you to post photo galleries on your website or weblog, and so on. One option is a neat little service from Slide.com (found via Emily Khoo).

You upload several photos to create a slide show, save it, and voila, you can share the show. Customizations include special effect transitions, including fading, pushing, sliding, spinning, and a couple of others. You can choose the slideshow size (small, medium, large) and the background and text colours (default black text, white background).

If you end up uploading a photo that you do not want in the show, or upload in the wrong order, you can delete or drag and drop slides until you got what you want. A sample slideshow runs on the Slide.com website so that you can see the result.

Once you’ve saved the show, and provided you sign up for the free service, Slide.com generates some HTML code that activates a Flash player. (The slideshows are saved as .SWF Flash files.) There are instructions for using adding their slideshows to websites/ weblogs using MySpace, Xanga, Friendster, hi5, Frappr, Blogger, and Piczo. Or you can email the file.

Here is an example using the pushing effect, which is less inclined to make you queasy than the sliding or fading effects:
